Diane Carrillo, PT, MPT, ATP/SMS
Diane Carrillo’s decision to open Thrive Seating & Mobility Specialties of Tucson, AZ. In 2019 came after several years of experience in her unique branch of physical therapy which is to recommend appropriate assistive devices as needed, conduct assessments for optimally configured wheelchairs and seating systems, and help her patients achieve their highest level of function by improving gait and balance.
She achieved her Master of Physical Therapy degree from California State University Fresno in 2006, having first graduated with a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Health Rehabilitation from the same facility. In 2017, she was certified by the Rehabilitative Engineering Services of America (RESNA) as an Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) and in 2018 achieved her Seating Mobility Specialist (SMS).
For 13 years she worked primarily as a physical therapist in neurology, practicing in both acute and outpatient neuro treatment clinics. She worked specifically in the field of seating and managed and ran a wheelchair clinic in San Diego from 2012-2019.
Gradually she began to realize that seating and positioning were her passion and was pleased at how she could help her patients thrive.
When she relocated to Tucson, AZ she decided to open her own practice that would allow her to fill a gap and give the specialized quality of care that was needed.
“If a patient needs a wheelchair, for example, there are so many options for people and a lot of people just don’t know which one is right for them and will really meet their needs,” she says.
Living with her husband who is a paraplegic has also given her a deeper understanding of the importance of having the most effective and appropriate assistive devices to thrive. She believes this personal circumstance combined with her professional knowledge, experience and training has helped her to “talk the talk and walk the walk.”
“My husband and I ‘do life.’ We get out all the time and go to games and travel and he works full time. We know what is possible when you have the best seating and mobility devices that are catered to your specific needs,” she explained.
Certified and experienced in her field, Diane is determined to help all her patients live life optimally, regardless of the challenges they face.
When Diane is not working, she enjoys being active outdoors and likes to golf, ride her bike, and exercise. She is also keen on paddle-boarding and other water sports as well as relaxing by lounging by a pool and reading.
